Harry Potter study day
February 8, 2020
JK Rowling recently revealed that Ravenclaw was the Gaelic house at Hogwarts. The Harry Potter novels and movies have a surprising amount of Celtic influence that we will be taking a look at in this study day. We will begin by reviewing the Harry Potter books and movies, their context and authorship. We will examine linguistic traces from the Gaelic and Brittonic Celtic languages in Harry Potter, then consider Rowling’s use of motifs from Celtic literature. Then we will turn our attention to the influence of Celtic art on the Potter books and movies. We will talk about how the books align to the traditional Celtic calendar. We will close by looking at how Harry Potter fits into the politics of present-day Scotland and the wider world, and have a bit of fun reviewing some of the multitude of fan fiction linking Harry Potter and ‘Celtic’ in the popular imagination.
