VUW Wellington Scottish Interest Group: A slice of time with Murchison: the Scottish origins of the geological timescale
July 28, 2020
Immortalised in the name of the South Island town, Sir Roderick Impey Murchison (1792-1871) was a geologist, as was his wife Charlotte (née Hugonin). Hamish Campbell (GNS Science Emeritus Scientist) will attempt with an illustrated talk, to explain the relevance of his geological explorations and why he is so significant in the history of science. Among other achievements: produced the first geological map of Russia; described several ‘periods’ of geological time including the Silurian and Permian at the Victoria University of Wellington Law School, Old Government Buildings, Lambton Quay.
