VUW Wellington Scottish Interest Group-Scottish butcher Sam Wilson’s supplies fitted the bill for the USA
June 28
It is said “An army marches on its stomach” (Frederick the Great/Bonaparte?). The barrels of meat for the 1812 War Army were stamped US. i.e. government property. This led to the nickname of “Uncle Sam” and the appearance of cartoons – still used in WWII! Lindy Morrell (USA citizen) will share the story of this ‘legend’ at 197 Willis St, between Dixon & Ghuznee Streets. Info: https://wellyscots.wordpress.com
