VUW Wellington Scottish Interest Group: Mrs. Barbour’s Army

The period is 1915 in Glasgow – at the time the most overcrowded city in Britain. Landlords were increasing rents to exorbitant rates for families who were already struggling to survive while their husbands and fathers were away fighting in the First World War. Mary Barbour led a protest to protect the women from being evicted from their tenements.
